In the mist of the latest mass shooting I thought it would be important to point out what my view on gun ownership is.
My view is that the constitution says:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
To me, this means in order to have a well regulated Militia (Military/Police Force) we must allow those that serve the right to carry and bear arms. At the time the 2nd Amendment was written we had a “as needed” arms forces. Thus it was important for each individual to hold their own personal weapon. As our nation has evolved we have created a professional arm forces. The need for those types of weapons in the general population is not necessary.
As for the right of the individual. As guns have evolved so to should our laws. Guns three-hundred years ago were very different then today. Laws need to reflect that. We regulate many things that a hundred years ago we did not (medication, cars, etc). Why are guns different?
Finally, I was in high school when Columbine happened. It was a shock. I remember going to school and teachers, administrators, & parents saying that things needed to change. It is over 20 years later and things haven’t. Students are still experiencing school shootings 20 years later! That is not right. My class, the class of 2000, should have been when it stopped. 1999, is when it should have stopped. How are we still at a point that this is still an issue to be debated. It’s not. It’s time to regulated. It’s time to be the change.
